About NailIt
NailIt turns a plain-English description of a home project into a materials list, a cost range, shopping links, and step-by-step instructions — free, in about 30 seconds.
Why this exists
Most homeowners abandon a project at the same point: they cannot find out what it costs without calling three contractors or building a spreadsheet from scratch. Cost guides online are either national averages with no materials behind them, or lead-generation pages designed to hand your phone number to a contractor. NailIt answers the narrower question honestly — what will the materials cost if I do this myself — and shows the actual products behind the number.

How estimates are produced
Cost estimates are generated by an AI model (Anthropic's Claude) prompted to price a standard DIY scope against current U.S. retail material costs, then screened for DIY suitability before publishing. We say so plainly on every page, and in more detail in our editorial policy and pricing methodology.
Two things follow from that, and we would rather you hear them from us:
- These are planning estimates, not quotes. They are for deciding whether a project is worth starting. Confirm live prices before you buy.
- Every figure is materials-only. Labor is excluded because you are supplying it. A NailIt number is not a total project cost.
What we refuse to estimate
NailIt deliberately excludes work that belongs with a licensed professional — electrical panels, gas lines, structural and load-bearing changes, and hazardous-material removal. When the estimator detects one of these, it says so and declines rather than producing a number. Project pages that fail the same screen are removed. See our safety guidance.
How we make money
NailIt is free and has no ads. When you buy through a retailer link we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That funds the tool. It does not change which products we show or what we estimate — full details in our affiliate disclosure.
Corrections
If a price looks wrong, a materials list is incomplete, or a project should not be DIY, tell us and we will review it. Accuracy and safety come before page count — we would rather remove a page than leave a bad number on it.
