You're standing in the tile aisle staring at 200 options, doing mental math on boxes, and quietly wondering whether you've bitten off more than you can chew. Every bathroom tile project starts this way. The good news: bathroom tiling is genuinely one of the most achievable intermediate home projects there is, as long as you follow the sequence and don't skip the unglamorous steps.
This guide walks through every phase in order: tile selection, substrate prep, waterproofing, layout, setting, cutting, grouting and sealing. Before your first hardware store run, drop your bathroom specs into NailIt and get a materials list with tile quantities, thinset, grout and tools matched to your room size. It's the cheapest way to avoid the most expensive rookie mistake: buying wrong.
One thing to set straight up front. This project spans 3–5 days once you account for cure times, and that timeline is not flexible. Rushing a thinset or grout cure is how a DIY tile job becomes a contractor repair job.
How long each stage actually takes

These are minimums under normal temperature and humidity. Cold or damp rooms take longer. Every one of them is a window where nothing looks like it's happening and the work is still going on.
Choosing the right tile for a wet room
Porcelain vs. ceramic
The spec that matters is water absorption. Porcelain absorbs less than 0.5%; ceramic absorbs between 0.5% and 3%. In a shower, that difference compounds over years of daily exposure and decides whether your substrate stays dry or quietly rots. Use porcelain for shower floors, shower walls, and any floor with regular water contact. Ceramic is fine for bathroom walls and dry floors. Keep it out of the shower.
The trade-off is density: porcelain is markedly harder to cut and needs a diamond wet saw blade. If this is your first tile project, budget for that in both tools and patience.
Natural stone, mosaic and specialty tile
Natural stone (marble, travertine, slate) gives a result no manufactured tile fully replicates. The maintenance commitment is real: sealing roughly every six months, no acidic cleaners, and a higher cost per square foot. For a first project, skip it. Learn the process on a forgiving material.
Mosaic tile (2x2 inches or smaller) is an excellent choice for shower floors. The extra grout lines give you more control over drainage pitch and add grip underfoot. For any wet-area floor, look for a DCOF rating of 0.42 or higher. That's the ANSI A326.3 benchmark used on tile sold in the US, and it will be printed on the box. Glossy tile on a wet floor is a liability, not an aesthetic choice.
Size, and why bigger is harder
Large-format tile (12x24 inches and up) looks clean, but it demands a flatter substrate and a mortar labelled "medium bed" or "large tile". Smaller tiles are far more forgiving, because minor substrate variation doesn't translate into visible lippage. If you're new, a 12x12 or 4x12 format gives you margin for error and still looks sharp.
Substrate and waterproofing: the part nobody photographs
Why cement board belongs behind every shower wall
Standard drywall absorbs moisture. Behind a shower wall it commonly fails within a few years, taking the tile with it. Use cement board (Durock, HardieBacker) or an approved foam backer panel such as Wedi. Screw into studs at the spacing the manufacturer specifies, typically 8 inches on centre. Tape all joints with alkali-resistant mesh tape, and skim with thinset.
Before any of that, check flatness. More than about 3mm of variation per metre means levelling compound on floors, or grinding down high spots on walls. Large-format tile is less forgiving still.
Applying a liquid waterproofing membrane
For DIYers, liquid-applied membranes such as RedGard or Mapelastic AquaDefense are the practical choice: forgiving on complex shapes, widely stocked, and no specialist trade skill required. Apply two coats in perpendicular directions with a roller or brush. Before the second coat, press fiberglass mesh tape into every internal corner and seam; that's where movement concentrates.
Then allow 24–48 hours of full cure before a single tile goes up. The membrane needs to be genuinely set, not just dry to the touch. Coverage per gallon varies by product, so size your order off the label rather than a rule of thumb.
The flood test: run it before you tile
After the membrane cures, plug the drain and fill the shower pan with a few inches of water. Leave it 24 hours, then check the level. Any drop means a leak: find it, fix it, test again.
This is the single step most beginner guides skip, and it's the checkpoint that separates a lasting installation from a future mould remediation bill. Finding a leak now costs you a day. Finding it after tiling costs you the whole installation.
Planning the layout before mortar touches anything
Find true centre, not the corner
Walls are almost never square. Start from a corner and your grid drifts visibly by the time it reaches the far wall. Measure the room's width and length, mark the midpoint of each wall, and snap two intersecting chalk lines to find true centre. Confirm they're square to each other with a laser level or a long straightedge. Those lines are your reference, not the walls.
Dry-fit first
Lay tiles dry along both reference lines, spacers included, before you open a bag of thinset. This tells you exactly where the edge cuts land. Any cut narrower than about a third of a full tile looks wrong and snaps easily during installation. If that's where your grid falls, shift the centre line to split the difference across both sides.
Dry-fitting also confirms your real tile count. Add a 10% waste factor for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal or complex patterns.
Mixing, spreading and setting without lippage
Thinset and trowel size
Mix thinset with cold, clean water to a smooth peanut-butter consistency. Let it slake for 10 minutes, then remix before use. Trowel size tracks tile size: a 1/4-inch notch for small tiles, up to a 1/2-inch notch for large format. For anything 12x24 inches or larger, use a medium-bed or large-tile mortar. Standard thinset collapses under a heavy tile and produces exactly the hollow spots you're trying to avoid.
Back-buttering and mortar coverage
Back-butter large tiles: spread a thin layer of thinset on the tile back before setting it. This kills the air pockets that cause hollow spots and later cracking. After the first few tiles, lift one and inspect coverage.
The coverage target depends on where you are. ANSI A108.5 calls for at least 80% mortar contact in dry interior areas, but 95% in wet areas: showers, tub surrounds, anything that sees standing water. A shower tile at 80% coverage has voids that will hold water.
Press each tile firmly with a slight twist, then tap with a rubber mallet. Use spacers consistently, and don't pull them before the thinset starts to firm up or you'll shift the alignment you just set.
Check as you go
Run a 4-foot level over the work every 4–5 tiles in both directions. Small deviations compound fast, and catching one at tile four is far easier than at tile forty. Lippage almost always traces back to a substrate that wasn't flat enough, or insufficient mortar coverage. Then let the thinset cure a full 24 hours before walking on the floor or starting grout.
Cutting tile cleanly
Wet saw vs. manual cutter
A manual snap cutter handles straight cuts in ceramic and costs roughly $20–60. For porcelain, or any tile 12 inches and larger, rent a wet saw. Big-box stores rent them by the day. The wet saw gives a cleaner edge and handles L-shaped cuts, notches around door frames and diagonals that a snap cutter can't. Batch every cut into a single rental day.
Curves, holes and raw edges
For cuts around pipes or floor drains, use a tile hole saw or an angle grinder with a diamond blade. Afterwards run a rubbing stone along any raw cut edge before setting it. Sharp edges cut hands and don't seat cleanly against the next tile.
Grouting, sealing and the finish
Sanded or unsanded
Wait a full 24 hours after the last tile is set. Then use sanded grout for joints 1/8 inch or wider, which covers most floors and standard wall spacing, and unsanded grout for joints narrower than 1/8 inch, particularly with delicate surfaces like glass or polished stone. The wrong choice cracks or scratches.
Mix with cold, clean water to a thick, smooth consistency, rest 10 minutes, remix. Apply diagonally across the joints with a rubber float, pressing firmly into each one. Work in sections of 10–15 square feet so it doesn't haze before you can clean it.
Clearing haze
Wipe with a damp, not soaking, sponge in circular motions, rinsing often. Follow with a second pass using a clean, barely damp sponge. Grout haze left to dry fully needs a dedicated haze remover: solvable, but entirely avoidable. Wait 72 hours before foot traffic.
Sealing
Most cement-based grouts want a penetrating sealer. Timing is the part people get wrong in both directions: seal too early and you trap moisture in uncured grout. Follow the cure time on your specific sealer. Manufacturers commonly specify somewhere between 3 and 10 days after grouting, and a few call for longer. Don't work from a generic number. Epoxy grouts are inherently stain-resistant and generally need no sealer at all. Reapply annually in a heavily used shower.
Where silicone replaces grout
Never grout at a change of plane. Tile-to-tub, tile-to-floor, tile-to-curb, and the inside corners of a shower all take flexible silicone caulk. Two surfaces meeting at a plane change move at different rates, and grout cracks under that movement every time. Silicone absorbs it.
Match the caulk colour to your grout, tool it smooth with a wet finger, and give it 24 hours before the shower sees water.
The checklist
A tile job that lasts comes down to respecting the sequence:
- Right tile for the application: porcelain in wet zones, DCOF 0.42+ underfoot
- Cement board or approved foam backer, flat and taped
- Waterproofed wet zone, verified by a flood test
- Centred layout confirmed by dry-fitting
- Correct mortar coverage on every tile, 95% in wet areas
- Patient grouting, with silicone at every change of plane
The failures that turn a DIY tile project into a repair job almost always trace to three skipped steps: the flood test before tiling, the 24-hour thinset cure before grouting, and grout used where silicone belongs.
