Installing a radiant barrier is one of the more approachable attic projects: no wiring, no plumbing, no structural work. The difficulty is not skill, it is heat, dust and working overhead in a confined space. Plan it for early morning.

A hammer tacker is the tool for this, not a squeeze-handle staple gun. You will drive several hundred staples overhead; a hammer tacker fires on a swing rather than a grip. Beyond that: a utility knife, a tape measure, foil tape, and a work light.
Step 1: check your ventilation first
Find your soffit vents from inside the attic and note where they are. The single most common way to make an attic worse is to cover them. If your soffit vents are already blocked by insulation, fix that before you install anything reflective, because ventilation does more for attic temperature than foil does.
Step 2: choose the method
Staple-up attaches foil to the underside of the rafters. It keeps the foil out of the dust and preserves the air gap between foil and deck, and it is what we recommend for most attics. Deck-applied lays foil over the existing floor insulation: faster, but it collects dust and loses effectiveness over the years. The trade-offs are set out in staple-up vs. deck-applied.
Step 3: measure and buy
Multiply attic floor area by your roof's slope factor, then add 10%. For a 1,500 sq ft attic on a 6/12 roof that is 1,845 sq ft, or 2 rolls. Full arithmetic in the 1,500 sq ft worked example.
Step 4: start at the ridge, work down
Cut lengths to run from ridge to eave. Staple the top edge to the rafter first, let the sheet hang, then work down stapling every 4 to 6 inches along both rafters. Overlap each new sheet 2 to 3 inches over the last.
Leave the foil slightly slack rather than drum-tight. A sheet under tension will pull staples loose as it moves with temperature, and it needs to sit clear of the deck to keep the air gap that makes it work.
Step 5: stop short of the eaves
Finish the foil 3 inches short of the roof deck at the eave so air can move from the soffit vents up the roof plane to the ridge. Sealing that path is how you cook a roof.
Step 6: tape the seams
Foil tape on the overlaps. This matters more for a vapour-retarding solid product than for perforated foil, but taped seams also stop the sheets flapping and tearing at the staples.
Step 7: work around obstructions properly
Cut around bracing, vents and fixtures rather than covering them. Keep the required clearance around recessed lights and chimneys. Do not staple through wiring, and do not lay foil across the top of a bathroom exhaust duct.
The mistakes that cost you the result
- No air gap. Foil pressed flat against the deck is just foil.
- Covered soffit vents. Trades an energy problem for a moisture problem.
- Solid foil stapled to rafters. Traps vapour in the roof assembly. Use perforated, and see why.
- Working at 2pm in August. Attic temperatures over 130 °F are a genuine heat-illness risk, not an inconvenience.
