This is the question that decides whether the project is worth doing, and it is the one most radiant barrier marketing carefully avoids. A radiant barrier reduces cooling load. Its value therefore tracks how much of your energy bill is air conditioning, which tracks your climate zone almost directly.

Zones follow the IECC climate zone map used by the US building codes. The verdicts are directional, not a modelled saving for your house: the US Department of Energy reports radiant barriers can reduce cooling costs by roughly 5–10% in hot, sunny climates, and states plainly that they are far less cost-effective in cool ones. Anyone quoting you a precise dollar figure per zone without modelling your roof, your insulation and your duct location is guessing.
Finding your zone
The IECC climate zone map divides the US into zones 1 through 8, with 1 the hottest. Zones are assigned by county, so a state can span several: Texas covers zones 2 and 3, California spans 3 through 5 and touches 6 in the mountains. Search for the IECC climate zone map and find your county rather than assuming from your state.
Why the difference is so stark
A radiant barrier intercepts heat radiating down from a sun-heated roof deck. That is a summer phenomenon, driven by solar gain. In Miami the roof is doing that for most of the year. In Fargo it does it for a few weeks, and for the rest of the year your problem is the opposite one: keeping conducted heat in, which is insulation's job, not foil's.
The Department of Energy's guidance is unusually blunt for a government document: radiant barriers are most effective in hot climates, and in cool climates it is generally more cost-effective to install more insulation. Reported cooling cost reductions in hot, sunny climates land around 5 to 10%.
The factors that shift the verdict within a zone
- Ducts in the attic. The strongest single argument for a radiant barrier. Attic ductwork gains heat radiantly all afternoon, and a barrier addresses that directly. This can make a zone 4 attic worth doing.
- Roof colour and material. A dark asphalt roof runs far hotter than a light or metal one, so there is more radiant gain to intercept.

- Attic ventilation. A poorly ventilated attic runs hotter, which raises the ceiling on what a barrier can do, but fixing the ventilation may be the cheaper win.
What we will not tell you

Producing an honest one requires modelling your specific roof area, orientation, colour, insulation level, duct location and local energy price, and a single number applied to every house in a zone would be invented rather than calculated.
